Here's some pictures of my latest audio installation, this isn't a loud setup is all about the quality. Every interior panel was removed so that sound deadening material could be installed behind as a result the car is considerably quieter especially at motorway speeds. It also means the car doesn't rattle when the bass gets a bit loud.

The MINI's stereo is connected up to the aux-in of the Pioneer P88RS unit via a special level adjuster. The reason for using the Pioneer HU was to use the pioneer as a time alignment processor, active crossover and equaliser as the standard unit has a distorted output.

The long term plan is to look at replacing this with either a Bit One or Pioneer processor at a later date. The benefit of this setup is the car retains all the standard gubbins i.e. bluetooth, usb and steering wheel controls and looks standardish but I can still use the Pioneer's Burr-Brown DAC CD unit for the ultimate in quality when I want.

The pioneer unit splits the audio signal into 3 components (high freq, mid frequency and sub) each of these signals are amplified by two boot mounted amplifiers which have 1500w RMS but they are turned right down for quality. The high frequencies go to the dash mounted tweeters whilst the mid range supplies the meaty door speakers. These weigh in at about 4kg each so they're serious pieces of kit. The sub signal is amplified and bridge and passed to pioneer's ultimate sub.

Just have to tidy up the boot to finish it off.

The sound quality is difficult to describe, but its a little better than my old Audi's as its been setup better. I'm very happy with it but having sat in a car which had a £23k installation there's always room for improvement.

I was a bit nervous cutting through the door panels but it seems to have worked out well. The speakers sounded muffled behind the standard grilles.

There a bit of work went in there. I'd settle for just the sound deadening material if it would stop the odd rattle.

I have seen some great set ups in there day, the one that comes to mind was a great Renult 5 GT turbo that had base tubes and sub in the boot and mega Amps and top of the range head unit and speakers but this was back in the early 90’s but it was worth a good few grand back then.
Mini as it was. As it is. As it always will be. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, it's up to you to decide if it counts!
